When Sam Smith last visited the land of the long white cloud in 2015 they went to Matamata’s famous attraction Hobbiton. They had such a blast that they proceeded to share many photos of their trip on their Instagram profile and promised they would be back. We’ve held him to that promise for the last two years and with their upcoming shows in November we thought what a ripper of an idea it would be to create a list of all the other great places around New Zealand Sam should visit. We certainly hope they will like The Thrill of It All … ha ha ha. Let’s get into it.

1. Queenstown – AJ Hackett Bungy

We don’t start things slow around here. If Sam really wants a thrill, they need to go bungy jumping in Queenstown. There’s even options of swings, catapults and ziprides if the bungy doesn’t quite tickle their fancy. Plenty of other celebs have done it, Sam! Come on!

2. Rotorua – Canopy Tour

If Sam loved Hobbiton, they’ll love this. The Rotorua Canopy Tours allow people to journey into beautiful New Zealand forests and even give them a chance to have a go at ziplining. If Sam is feeling extra adventurous, they can take ‘The Ultimate Canopy Tour’ which involves cliff walks, swing bridges and more.

3. Waitomo Caves – Black Water Rafting & Glowworms

Waitomo Caves in Otorohanga offer a few experiences that definitely cater to every personality. Depending on how Sam’s feeling, they can go check out the famous glowworms or they can test their bravery with black water rafting. We’re down for both, personally.

4. Mt. Ruapehu – Skiing

We hope Sam can ski because we’re rather useless. But Mt. Ruapehu sure is beautiful and skiing down the volcano sure is an experience that isn’t to be missed. If the skiing doesn’t work out, Sam could use the scenery for their next album cover right?

5. Taupo – Huka Falls & Great Lake

Taupo has a lot going on. If we had to pick only one place to take Sam, this would definitely be it. The Huka falls Jet is a bundle of fun and there are stunning walking and mountain biking tracks all around. And once all that cardio has been done, a visit to the thermal valley and hot pools is the perfect end to the day.

6. Mount Cook – Big Sky Stargazing

Now we know Sam will love this one. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve (yikes, what a mouthful) is far from any city lights which means that the sky is dark. But perfect for stargazing. This will be a very romantic trip for us and Sam, and we can’t wait.

7. Kaikoura – Whale Watching

How lovely! We thought we’d throw a few safe ideas in here. Kaikoura is one of the only places in the world where you can easily see sperm whales, which are the reallll big ones, so it’s a pretty cool experience. The tours are a bit pricey so … Sam’s shout?

8. Wanaka – Paragliding

Experience New Zealand like the birds do! Doesn’t that sound fun Sam? Come on…

9. Waikato – Bridal Veil Falls

One of Waikato’s most beautiful scenes is the famous Bridal Veil Falls. Walk all the way to the top of the waterfall and back down again and repeat 10 more times. OR just do it once and then enjoy a good picnic. We’ll leave that decision to Sam.

10. Christchurch – International Antarctic Centre

To end things on a bloody good note, we’d take Sam to see some penguins. The International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch is like the Disneyland of New Zealand. So many fun things to do, so little time. Plus, we really want one of those family photos with Sam.

We’ll see you in November, Sam! Make sure you bring your comfy shoes and your brave pants.
