Covering a chart-topping song is one of the best ways to gain clout for up and coming artists. But for those A-Listers who are already household names, it’s a fun way to inject their own style on a track and show support for their fellow artists at the same time. From Lewis Capaldi covering Halsey to Shawn Mendes covering Post Malone, these are some of the best covers that you may have missed.
Halsey – Sucker (Jonas Brothers)
Slowing down the tempo and introducing a saxophone brings a whole lot of sex appeal to the playful banger. And don’t even get us started on those spicy growls. As if there was ever any doubt, the cover got the seal of approval from the Jo Bro’s themselves.
HALSEYYY!! That #Sucker cover on @BBCR1 was so sick 🔥🔥🔥 We love you!! @halsey #LiveLounge pic.twitter.com/hEDVLRfzxm

BENEE – Mile High (James Blake)
At the start of the year, BENEE blessed us with a cover of James Blake’s ‘Mile High’ for triple j’s Like A Version. Despite the salty boomers getting upset in the comments over a little autotune (they obviously haven’t heard the original), it’s suuuuper tasty, and we want more 😋.
Taylor Swift – Riptide (Vance Joy)
Miss Swift has performed a variety of iconic covers over the years, even going as far as to leave a space for them on her Speak Now World Tour setlist. From ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, and ‘Drops of Jupiter’ to Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’, anything she touches is pure magic. But nothing can quite top Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’. It’s like the song was made for her.
Demi Lovato – Too Good At Goodbyes (Sam Smith)
Usually, we’d be worried for anyone that was going to take on a Sam Smith song but for Demetria, it’s no sweat. Both powerhouse vocalists and now newly BFF’s 👫. Maybe it was this exact moment when Sam clicked that he wanted her on ‘I’m Ready’.
Billie Eilish and Finneas – Yesterday (The Beatles)
Billie and her brother Finneas had the honour of performing during the In Memorium segment at the 2020 Oscars earlier this year and they chose the timeless Beatles classic ‘Yesterday’. Try to watch it without tearing up… 😭

Lewis Capaldi – Without Me (Halsey)
We didn’t think that Halsey’s ‘Without Me’ could get any more emotional but in enters Mr Lewis Capaldi. Is there anything this man can’t sing?! Brb just heading to the supermarket to bulk buy some tissues.
Niall Horan – Circles + Shawn Mendes – Psycho (Post Malone)
We have a face-off, it’s the battle of the Post Malone Covers! Luckily these guys are such good mates otherwise it could get ugly 🤪 In one corner we’ve got everybody’s favourite Irishman Niall covering ‘Circles’ and in the other corner we have his best pal Shawn singing ‘Psycho’.
Troye Sivan – Here (Alessia Cara)
During an intimate radio performance for Elvis Duran back in 2016, Troye chose ‘Here’ by Alessia Cara, and the comments section truly popped off. In amongst all of the fans asking if the pair could collab was a post from Alessia herself, “when troye sounds cooler singing ur song than u.” 😂 Later that year they teamed up on a remix of Troye’s song ‘Wild’, making a helluva lot of dreams come true.
Disclosure ft. Sam Smith – Hotline Bling (Drake)
The top comment on the video wraps it up perfectly, “Sam could make any song sound good.” There’s really nothing else more to say, giving us all the feels in classic Drizzy fashion. Check it out for yourself below.
Conan Gray – Love Story (Taylor Swift)
It wouldn’t be a true list without our resident Swiftie. When MTV Australia asked Conan if he could cover his favourite Taylor Swift song we could hear his squealing all the way from LA 🙉. Not gonna lie but the term “acoustically stripped” is always a wee bit of a turn on…
BONUS: Niall Horan & Lewis Capaldi – Teenage Dream (Katy Perry)
Yup, we’ve already listed both of these fellas but this one was too good not to include. The best footage we can find may look like it’s been filmed on a calculator but the bromance still shines through. Another big “F YOU” to Coronavirus for cancelling their joint tour, but at least we have this sneak peek to tide us over.
