To celebrate the release of Katy Perry’s sixth album ‘Smile’ we took a trip down memory lane to reminisce on some moments where the 35-year-old from California put a big grin on our face.

Here are ten classics from Katy Perry’s career to date!

Smile

Let’s kick things off with the new album itself. It’s Katy’s first album since ‘Witness’ was released in 2017, so it’s been a long three-year wait.

There is a bit of everything on this release. ‘Daisies’ is a track with messages of self-empowerment and the lyrics to ‘Resilient’ discuss the hard road returning to success. ‘Cry About It Later’ also tells us that going to the club is a great way to fix a broken heart…

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)

Believe it or not, TGIF (Last Friday Night) was released about this time, 10 years ago! Not only is this one of the biggest songs of her career, but it was her fifth track on the Billboard Hot 100, at the same time, from the same album – the first female artist to ever do so.

Whether it’s on the radio while you’re driving to work, blasting in the club or playing at your school formal – TGIF (Last Friday Night) is an ageless track which always gets the party started!

Fashion

We’ve seen thousands of outfits and many different hairstyles from Katy over the years. She keeps up with the trends and goes out of her way to make sure she is seen with some of her more daring numbers.

Whether it was her ‘California Girls’ get-up, wedding dress in ‘Hot N Cold’ or looking like Jane from Tarzan in ‘Roar’ – it’s always exciting to see what Katy will come up with next!

Super Bowl Performance

Katy Perry brought the energy to the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2015 to thousands in Arizona, and millions watching across the globe. Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyonce, Madonna, U2 and Bruce Springsteen have all stepped foot on the same stage. Katy Perry has etched her name alongside some of the best musicians of all time.

Whether it was the 700kg walking lion she entered the stadium with, the dancing beach balls or a surprise performance alongside Missy Elliot – this video will no doubt put a smile on your dial!

I Kissed A Girl

Katy Perry burst onto the scene with this one in 2008. Despite ‘I Kissed A Girl’ being her breakout single, it wasn’t her first attempt at making it in the music industry. In 2001, Perry released an album under the name ‘Katy Hudson’ where her primary genre was Christian rock! This move sure would have ruffled a few feathers in those circles…

The catchy chorus is ingrained in people’s heads to this day. If you weren’t jamming to this one on your MP3 player, it definitely would have been the go-to track on your ‘Now: The Greatest Hits’ compilation CD.

What a throwback.

Orlando Bloom

Rumours began to swirl regarding a potential romance between this power couple at the Golden Globe Awards in 2016. Four years later, Bloom proposed to Katy Perry on Valentines Day and now they’re engaged! Their wedding was due to take place earlier this year, however like couples all over the world, COVID-19 put a halt to that, so we’ll just have to wait a little bit longer to see that celebration.

California Girls

Here’s a fact. Empire State of Mind was released by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys at a similar time to California Gurls. Katy Perry was quoted saying she and Snoop Dogg wanted to make sure there was an LA version to compete with the New York themed track.

Katy Perry has had some pretty memorable music videos throughout her career so far, but none quite as notable as this one. Cupcakes, candy floss and whipped cream on an idyllic beach was every kid (and adults) dream back in 2010, and how ideal would that place be to escape to at the moment?

American Idol

In 2018, Katy Perry was announced as a judge on American Idol, alongside Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan. Her enthusiasm, kind-heartedness and energy were instantly noticeable on the show. Some contestants left with a better memory than others.

Check out 17-minutes of her funniest moments to date, which includes some dancing, the word ‘wig’, and a bit of a tumble in her heels!

Dark Horse

Dark Horse was released in 2013 on Katy’s third album, Prism. This was a super new sound that was brought to life, alongside American rapper Juicy J. For a while, it seemed everyone knew his rap word for word as it played out!

With a mix of trap, pop and hip-hop, this was a song that catered for such a broad audience, making it a crowd favourite. It also spent an entire year in the Billboard Hot 100, which is no easy feat.
