Troye Sivan Mellet is about my age, yet ten folds more successful (and adorable). As a creative, he radiates highly contagious feelings of freedom and love that spread like wildfire through the speakers and into his listeners personal environment. I’ve got his music playing in the background at this very moment as I write this deep-dive, and I sure do feel a sense of budding contentment as my fingers sweep the keyboard.
Not confined to music, Sivan is also a model, director and actor (in case he needed any more lazy hobbies). He played Wolverine in the 2000’s X-Men Origins, appeared in Joel Edgerton’s ‘Boy Erased’ motion picture and soundtrack, had a stint as Oliver Twist, was the protagonist in the trilogy ‘Spud’, and performed in many other successful TV productions. He was also a successful Youtube personality with over 4 million subscribers. Crikey, this is a kid more motivated than your average John Doe.
As Youtube offered this unique kind of intimacy between himself and his audience, Troye’s journey from internet fame to legitimate fame only increased this ongoing relationship with fans. He’s sure done a few incredible things in his time to ensure his listeners feel continuously accepted and inspired. He’s been named one of Time’s “Most Influential Teens of 2014”, coming out on Youtube in 2013 and using his platform to speak out about the LGBTQ community. With a big focus on activism, he also often features charitable elements in his tours which allow his fans to donate to larger organisations with their ticket purchase. $1 from every sale of his ‘Bloom’ tour went to a selection of mental health charities. It seems Sivan is forever striving and looking for ways to be a kinder human being.
So where did his music career start?
Born in South Africa 5 June 1995 (we’ve got a Gemini on our hands here people) and raised in Australia, Sivan’s music career began at the ripe age of 11. One of his inspirations is indeed said to be the country-pop singer Taylor Swift, with his favourite songs ‘Delicate’, ‘Blank Space’ and ‘You’re In Love’. Bless! His first public performances were in a ‘Channel Seven Perth Telethon’, one with Guy Sebastian. Fast forward to him reaching the finals of the ‘StarSearch’ competition in 2007 where he began to make his first EP and grow a heavy following. His taste for dreamy and intimate melancholic pop only seemed to take off from there. His fashion also took a berocca. Check out some of his unforgettable looks.
Troye’s very first EP, TRXYE(2014), debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes chart in a few countries — oh, wait, it was 55 countries. EP ‘Wild’ and first debut studio album ‘Blue Neighbourhood’ then came out with a hot bang in 2015. 2018 saw him release a second studio album ‘Bloom’ which both myself and the US Top 100 Charts were a very big fan of.
Just this year, Sivan has released two singles out for the listen. The first is ‘Take Yourself Home’. Let me tell you, this was some kind of musical medicine during the pandemic. Filled with guitar plucks, vocal echoes and a chill beat, the end then leaves us with an electronic sort-of tribal-fusion vibe as a surprise. I’m ridiculously into experimental electro-pop at the moment so this teased my tastebuds immensely. “Take Yourself Home is kind of a pep talk with yourself and the place you’re from. Grappling with your place in the world. I write these songs as a diary entry, then as life and places change and relationships change, songs can take on a new meaning entirely. Clearly that has happened for this song, with what is going on in the world right now.”.
Troye has also announced he’s looking to put out his up and coming 6-song EP ‘In A Dream’ to the public on 21 August, in which he’s released the first gorgeous track ‘Easy’. He describes the new EP as “A story that’s still unfolding, this small collection of songs explores an emotional rollercoaster period in my life when the feelings and thoughts were most shockingly fresh. Revisiting these songs and moments is tough, but I’m proud of this music and excited to have it out in the world.”
To name a couple all-time favourite recent Troye Sivan performances, we’d have to include his electrifying modern pop anthem ‘My My My’ performance with Taylor Swift at the Rose Bowl last year. The track’s soothing instrumentals and forever lush hook prove a real treat. I also absolutely relished in his 2019 ‘73 question’ interview with Vogue Magazine. Did I mention Margot Robbie gave him a shoutout in her own 73 questions interview with Vogue?
This talented man has just gone from strength to strength over the years as he continuously extends his kindness and portfolio of talent. He has done genuine good over his lifespan, both in the music, performance, and charitable scene. He spreads sheer kindness and justice throughout the world and that is something his fans shall forever stand by.
