Samuel Frederick Smith, the human that has the ability to spark emotion within any demographic, attracting thousands to their shows and millions to download their records, first came to our attention in 2012 with ‘Latch’. Their debut album, In the Lonely Hour, was released in May 2014, transforming the softly spoken British singer-songwriter into a global megastar. We haven’t been able to get enough of Sam since.

Let’s see what our favourite British star, Sam Smith’s been up to so far in 2019.

Teased and then released a brand-new single.

Choreographed by our very own Parris Goebel, ‘How Do You Sleep’ has reached over 400 million views since its July 19 release and it-is-everything.

“This year, both personally and musically, I feel so free. More than ever I have had so much fun making this record and this video. Time to dance darlings x”.

The video suits Sam impeccably, the movement crafted as if to be both masculine and feminine, topped with something a little… extra.

Set fire to gender stereotypes.

Smith truly is one of those artists that is nothing but real with their fans; even if it means they have to get personal. Earlier this year, Sam Smith became one of the only few celebrities known to step out in front of the public eye and announce that they identifiy as non-binary – being neither man nor woman. They now go by they/them pronouns.

“Ever since I was a little boy, ever since I was a little human, I didn’t feel comfortable being a man really. I never did”, Sam told British GQ.

Smith spoke out about being non-binary in the first episode of Jameela Jamil’s new “I Weigh” interview series, which encourages a modern revolution against shame.

Returned to us for a quick kiwi-summer trip.

Spotted in January by New Zealand news media, Smith posted a photo on the gram of themselves on a plane with the caption “26 hours later, finally arrived in heaven”. The post was taken down the next day – but we certainly saw it!

We already knew Sam was in love with our home before this cheeky-fast post. Last time they were on our shores they voiced on their Instagram story: “It’s my last day of holiday today in New Zealand and I just wanted to give a massive shout out to every person I’ve met. I love it here and how welcome I feel every time I’ve been.”

Started yet another incredibly powerful conversation on socials.

We can always count on Sam Smith to spark the conversations needed to be had in this modern society. With self-esteem being one of the largest repressed mental health issues worldwide, 22 weeks ago, Smith posted an incredibly powerful and personal photo of themselves shirtless on the beach, with a caption revealing their own struggle with loving the curves their mum and dad gave them. What we love about Sam is how refreshing it is to have an artist that ensures they communicate with their fans on a very raw, relatable and unfiltered level.

Made fans cry at Lollapalooza Chile 2019.

Sam Smith took the stage during day 3 of the epic ‘Lollapalooza Chile 2019’ in Santiago, Chile. Smith performed 19 of their glorious tracks live on one of the eight stages at the festival. They look right in their element; as do their fans in Chile!

Gave ‘Dancing with a Stranger’ to the world.

Sam Smith released the feelings of frustration, loneliness and heartbreak, in a song relatable to us all. The hit “Dancing with a Stranger” with former Fifth Harmony member Normani, currently has over 200 million views on YouTube. Fun fact: The collaboration happened by chance, when Smith found out vocal powerhouse Normani was in the studio next door to his in Los Angeles, they invited her to work on the track together. If you didn’t believe in fate, now you do.

Sam, we most absolutely will not be able to sleep with this release.
