Our favourite Australian pop-punk legends are back like they never left, with their new album Everyone’s A Star! scheduled to drop next month on November 14. It’s no secret that the boys are astronomically authentic in being able to stay true to their roots, while also always embracing fresh chapters in their personal lives and creative paths. Fuelled by the insanely exciting energy of their new era, let’s catch up on what ‘your favourite boyband’ has been up to since we’ve last heard from them.
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WITH ‘THE 5SOS SHOW’
The boys commemorated ten years of their self-titled debut album, which is a nostalgic goldmine home to the likes of ‘She Looks So Perfect’, ‘Amnesia’ and ‘Don’t Stop’. As always, the 5SOS boys aren’t shy to pay tribute to their decade of eras and pop-punk mischief. They embarked on a worldwide (and discography-spanning) anniversary tour, ‘The 5SOS Show’, across North America and Europe in 2023. Like most 10th birthday parties there was banter, showing off, and games – the boys literally rolled a massive dice every night to choose a new fan-favourite deep-cut to perform.
THEY’RE ‘NOT OK’
Absolutely smashing it out the park with the lead single of their new record, the boys teased this one with the self-started rumour they were breaking up. Leaning into the chaotic highs and adrenaline of a rock-fuelled spiral of fame, the music video is cheeky and self-referential, including scenes beyond your wildest imagination (like Luke dressed as a nun eating hotdogs covered in ‘5Sauce’). It quite simply looks like they’re having the most fun ever and we’re so here for it!
THEY’RE ALL GROWN UP (…KIND OF)
Since the last record, band members Michael and Luke have embraced family life and have both welcomed their first children with their respective long-term partners, Crystal Leigh, and fellow musician Sierra Deaton, in recent years. The boys prefer to keep their family lives out of the spotlight for the most part – but we’re so glad they’ve shared the news with us. There’s no doubt twitter went crazy over their debut DILF-hood and was quick to reminisce on fanfics of the past. We’re so happy to hear of our favourite heartthrobs’ happy endings (Calum and Ashton finally earning their cool/fun uncle titles, that is).

THEY JOINED THE JONAS BROTHERS ON STAGE
5SOS surprised fans everywhere last month when they popped up as surprise guests at the Jonas Brothers ‘JONAS20’ show in Los Angeles. Being introduced by Joe as “our friends” and “your friends”, the boys took to the stage to surprise fans with the ultimate boyband crossover. 5SOS sung longtime hit ‘She Looks So Perfect’ – and we’ve been torn between the nostalgia killing us and curing us ever since.

THEY’VE SIGNED WITH REPUBLIC
The boys’ upcoming sixth studio album is their first release in a new partnership with Republic Records, after parting ways with Interscope in 2021. The fresh energy and creative platform is promising 5SOS’s boldest artistry thus far. From the early days of YouTube covers in Sydney garages and their catapult in One Direction, this time they’re emerging as an evolved “5SOS 2.0” and what they’re declaring their “most ambitious era yet”.
NEW HAIRAS (Hair Eras, of course)
Naturally, a new era isn’t complete without fresh looks. Lead singer Luke has traded his blonde curls for a full-head of gel spikes, straight out of the early 2000s time machine. Calum revealed blue locks in their latest Rolling Stone shoot, taking a leaf out of Michael’s hairstory. And Michael is proving he’s still the only scene emo left in the world (we welcome anyone to come out and challenge his title / become his new best friend). Now all we’re needing is a revival of the Tumblr blogs that followed these transformation updates.

ALL THE BOYS HAVE RELEASED SOLO ALBUMS
All four of the boys have released projects in recent years, with records that have flipped the stereotype of dreaded omen of band members going solo on its head (so much so that Michael’s album is literally branded as a sidequest). Instead we’ve been absolutely spoiled with new albums that have built on the 5SOS sound and world we love so much, while allowing the boys the chance to grow, explore and strengthen each of their individual sonic identities (the ultimate win-win).
One of the most recent of these was Calum’s debut album ORDER chaos ORDER, released in June, an alternative tunneling to the indie-pop sound of dreams.
