Kian Brownfield was just 16 years old when he won one of Australia’s most respected music competitions – Triple J unearthed. Being only 16, Kian entered into the High School segment of the competition (along with 11,000 others), but to hear his track you would have no idea the person behind it is still so young.

Much like fellow teenager and much loved Billie Eilish, Kian seems wise beyond his years, especially when it comes to the brooding tones and soulful lyrics of his winning track, ‘Waiting‘.

Maybe it’s because he’s been surrounded by music his whole life, accompanying his dad while he travelled around Indigenous communities making music, since he was just two years old. Maybe it’s because he teamed up with Baker Boy at the tender age of 13 to create the hit ‘Cloud 9‘, and then went on to smash his performance of the track at Splendour In The Grass. Maybe he’s just naturally gifted?

In any case, it’s hard not to feel a bit emotional for the guy watching this video. We can only imagine what it feels like to have a fire alarm go off mid performance in front of your whole school, let alone hear some of the biggest news of your life.

Check out the full video above and try not feel all the feels.
