Introducing New Zealand’s newest singer-songwriter and one to watch… Niko Walters! Music runs in the family for Niko, being the younger brother of Matiu Walters, lead singer of NZ’s biggest band SIX60. The Kiwi lad has been quietly waiting in the wings for his moment to share his music with the world. His first teaser track ‘Moving On’ accompanied by a one-take video in a dimly lit isolated setting unveiled his musical prowess. Just one week later he dropped his debut single ‘Together’ alongside a lyric video with a patient Niko waiting inside a ‘Soak & Suds’ laundromat.

Niko’s sound is made up of contemporary soul, mixed with elements of pop and hip hop. He draws inspiration from the likes of Matt Corby, Bon Iver and Anderson Paak with the main objective of simply making “beautiful sounding music.” And he’s done just that with his first two tracks.

‘Moving On’ describes a relationship where there is a lot of love to give but it’s been destroyed by self-sabotage and inner demons – evident in the lyrics ‘I look at her and try my best / but I only see my failure’ and ‘the more that I need you / the more that I push you away’. The song may be considered long at 5:23, but Niko’s soulful storytelling contemplated with dreamy acoustics make every second worth it.

‘Together’ delicately picks up the pace, showcasing the diversity in Niko’s soundscape. Expressing bucket-loads of appreciation for his significant other through lyrics  – ‘cause I’ve never felt any better / than when we’re together / I wanna feel this way forever and ever and ever,’ this track is a feelgood tune with a chorus you’ll be head-bopping to for the foreseeable future.
