Ellie Goulding is a Brit-pop icon, a philanthropist and a worldwide chart topper. With hits such as ‘Love Me Like You Do,’ ‘Burn,’ and ‘I Need Your Love’ anything she touches turns to gold (or platinum). In celebration of her fourth album on the way, these are the 10 things you should know about Ellie Goulding.

1. It’s been a decade since her debut album Lights was released.

Ten years ago we were #blessed with ✨Lights✨ the debut album that introduced Ellie Goulding to the world and propelled her into our beating hearts. Released on February 26 in 2010, the ten-track album went on to sell a massive 2 million copies worldwide. In the era of MySpace, tracks such as ‘Under The Sheets’ and ‘Starry Eyed’ took on a life of their own and were quick to earn the newcomer mass appeal from fans.

2. Her social activism and philanthropy is just as important to her as her music career.

Since just six years old, Ellie has always been an advocate for Mother Earth. She uses her voice offstage to bring attention to climate change, homelessness, underprivileged children and raising money for charities close to her heart. She is constantly encouraging her millions of fans to sign up for World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, to reduce their carbon footprint and also used her guest appearance on Sesame Street as an opportunity to reach a younger audience. Since 2017 she has been a UN Environment Global Ambassador after being honoured with the prestigious Global Leadership Award 🏆. Most recently, she recorded an original song called ‘In This Together’, for Sir David Attenborough’s new Netflix series Our Planet.

3. She’s ambidextrous.

Don’t worry – we had to Google what it meant too. Ellie has the ability to use both her left and right hands equally well. Which obviously means both her guitar playing and songwriting power is basically at a super saiyan level at all times.

4. She’s worked with Kiwi producer Joel Little.

Joel Little is quickly becoming a household name after starring in Taylor Swift’s ‘Miss Americana’, and working with our fave kiwis Lorde and Broods. And it’s no surprise that Ellie linked up with him on two Delirium bonus tracks, ‘Paradise’ and ‘The Greatest’. Tbh they are both so good they should have made it into the final tracklist. Wonder if he will feature on #EG4… 👀

5. She’s officially off the market and happily married.

In August of last year Ellie married the love of her life Caspar Jopling 💍. The lovebirds both counted down on Instagram until the day finally came, with the ceremony held at York Minster Cathedral in the UK. With four dresses, three outfit changes, a lavish castle reception and the likes of Katy Perry on the guest list, it sounded like a true fairytale.

6. Speaking of weddings… she casually performed at none other than Princess Kate and Prince William’s.

Ellie performed her breathtaking 2010 rendition of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ for the couples first dance, as well as some of her own material and covers of The Killers ‘Mr. Brightside’ and Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition’. Without a doubt a bucket list moment. That same year (2011) she also sung at the White House in front of Barack and Michelle Obama during the National Christmas Tree lighting.

7. She fell off a segway and her fans will never let her forget it.

It really didn’t help when 20 paps were there to capture the exact moment 😅. It’s been 8+ years since the incident in Miami and fans still bring it up to this day, solidifying the (hilarious) photos straight into meme culture. The fact she’s able to consistently lol about it makes us love her even more 😂.

8. She’s contributed to the soundtracks of some of the biggest movie franchises in the business.

Oh ya know, just another day in the life of Ellie – recording hits for the likes of The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games, Divergent and Fifty Shades franchises. In 2012, she recorded the song ‘Bittersweet’ for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. A year later, she penned the song ‘Mirror’ for the The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. She then recorded the song ‘Beating Heart’ for the 2014 film Divergent, and ‘Love Me Like You Do’ from Fifty Shades Freed was one of the biggest songs of 2015. ‘Still Falling For You’ from Bridget Jones’s Baby will always hold a special place in NZ’s heart 💙, as we were the very first place she ever performed it live!

9. Billie Eilish freaked out about her on a red carpet.

I mean, she’s only human.

10. She just dropped another brand new banger!

Whilst the anticipation for #EG4 builds, Ellie has dropped another 🔥🔥🔥 track – ‘Worry About Me’ feat. blackbear. The ‘Me’ trilogy is now complete – ‘Close To Me’ (2018), ‘Hate Me’ 2019 and now ‘Worry About Me’ in 2020. If these collabs are a taster for what’s to come, she’s sure to burn her way back up the charts once more! Check out the spooky vid below.
